Justin Fields Breaks Bears Franchise Record In Spectacular Fashion – Sports Mockery

Everybody already knew Justin Fields was a special athlete. What continues to astound them is the different ways he makes plays despite a terrible situation around him. That was on display yet again in the 2nd quarter against Philadelphia. Needing a score to get back the momentum, Fields engineered a brilliant drive highlighted by what arguably might be his best run of the year. Considering the ones he’s had up to this point, that is saying a lot. What makes it even better is the 39-yard rumble ended up breaking Bobby Douglass’ single-season rushing record of 968 set in 1972. Fields sits at 976 following that run.

It was so absurd for many reasons. He had no business escaping the initial sack. Then he used a combination of speed and strength to avoid tacklers down the field. It was another testament to how physically gifted he is. Then, in true leader fashion, he graciously let David Montgomery finish it off with a touchdown. This is once again proof that Fields isn’t interested in personal stats. It’s all about winning. The fact he put the Bears ahead on the scoreboard against the best team in football can’t be understated.

Justin Fields can be so much better with help.

Right now, he’s working with scraps. Darnell Mooney is out. Khalil Herbert is out. Teven Jenkins might be done for the year. The Bears offense wasn’t even that talented, to begin with. Yet their quarterback continues finding ways to make things happen. That is what franchise players do. If the organization wants to take the next step, they have to start putting other good players around him. GM Ryan Poles will have a big opportunity for that next off-season with loads of cap space and a likely top five draft pick.

Until then, the goal for Justin Fields is obvious. Don’t get hurt. We’ve seen everything we need to see. He is the future of this franchise. It’s about staying healthy and stacking experience now. That might prove difficult with how depleted the offensive line is becoming. While the idea of benching Fields felt like a joke not too long ago, it might be something the Bears have to consider. Then again, that wouldn’t send a good signal to the locker room. Next man up. That’s how it goes.
