Christmas is here and you probably don’t feel at all ready. At this point, picking what to wear falls to the bottom of a very long to-do list, after stuffing the turkey, wrapping gifts and mentally preparing for time with family.

Deciding what to wear on Christmas Day isn’t easy. Dress codes vary wildly. You could find yourself cooking for 12, running after boisterous children and sipping cocktails in just one afternoon. Our simple rules will see you stylishly through…

1. If in doubt, go for sequins

They’re failsafe, and you probably don’t have to buy anything new — I bet there’s something sparkly at the back of your wardrobe. If you’re worried about feeling overdressed, go for a wearable shape like this Mint Velvet shirt (second from left). Wear with jeans — perfect for getting things done.

2. Think table-top dressing

Let’s face it, once you’re seated, guests only see you from the waist up, so have fun with that. Just don’t go too tight or clingy. Look for a statement blouse with striking collar detail such as this red chiffon beauty from Reserved (third from right).

3. Embrace the Christmas jumper

Kitsch is fine — but classy is cooler. Christmas jumpers get a bad rap but you can’t knock this Fair Isle-style Boden design (third from left). Pair with statement, block-colour trousers.

4. Pile on the jewels

More is more when it comes to accessories at Christmas. If you’re looking for something new, a power necklace, such as this one from Kate Spade (second from left) is a delight.

Don’t forget the children. A knit like the one from River Island (far left) can make even the scruffiest seven-year-old look presentable. Add hair bows and the grandparents will be enchanted.

Stick to festive hues and have yourself a very Merry Christmas.
