Great Outfits in Fashion History: Tinashe’s 2016 Opening Ceremony Snakeskin Co-ord
Tin-a-shay forever. (That’s a Britney Spears reference.)
There are perfectly good celebrity style moments, and then there are the looks that really stick with you, the ones you try desperately to recreate at home. In ‘Great Outfits in Fashion History,’ Fashionista editors are revisiting their all-time favorite lewks.
One of my favorite moments in pop culture history is Tinashe’s performance of “All Hands on Deck” on “Good Morning America” in 2015. At 8:49 a.m. EST, before most of us had finished our first cup of coffee, she turned out an absolutely incredible performance of an absolutely perfect song — the choreo, the vocals, everything on point. The link will remain purple on every device I ever own because of how often I watch it. This is all to say: I love Tinashe. A lot.
Since her debut album, she’s put out hit after hit, even collaborating with the one and only Britney Spears. She’s also become a fashion week staple, unafraid to try new looks and champion up-and-coming designers, like when she sat front row at the Opening Ceremony show in 2016.

Like a lot of millennials who lived through the hipster years of the aughts (you will never catch me calling it “indie sleaze” with any semblance of sincerity), I thought Opening Ceremony was the coolest shit ever, which it was and is. (Side note: I had an internship interview at the store — RIP — for its blog, but got caught in a freak rainstorm on my way there and totally beefed things. It’s haunted me ever since.) There wasn’t a single issue of Nylon that didn’t feature founders Carol Lim and Humberto Leon somehow, and all of their designs were cool and approachable but slick as hell. Their eye for curating other brands in the store was always, always top-notch.
But back to Tinashe: The velvet, metallic gray snakeskin co-ord ‘fit she wore to the show is a perfect encapsulation the singer and the brand. The streetwear vibes are offset by the off-the-shoulder/sparkly-choker combo and the matching, thigh-high, platform boots are cool as fuck. The long, braided ponytail and simple makeup look with strong lashes and a glossy lip pair perfectly, highlighting just how beautiful she is. The entire look is somehow both trendy and timeless, and would not be out of place on a runway these days. It’s fun and it’s cool, which is exactly what Tinashe delivers, each and every time.
