Style alert: Hooded gowns seem to be the latest fashion trend on the block
The hooded gown is having a big moment in the fashion world right now. Dating back to the 80s, they appeared on the runway as part of haute couture collections of labels like Versace to Yves Saint Laurent, after which — as happens with most trends — they swiftly landed on red carpets everywhere. So, it was only a matter of time before celebrities embraced this fashion staple with open arms, and well, also added their own unique twist to it.
Recently, it was supermodel Alessandra Ambrosio who took the trend to the next level on the Cannes 2023 red carpet. Her plum-toned gown with a hooded neckline featured embellished sequins all over. She accessorised the look with a statement necklace and matching dangling earrings.

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan also looked stunning in the ‘mystical hood’ gown from Label Sophie Couture. The ensemble included an aluminum-finish dress with a massive black bow, a corset bodice and crystal embellishments. She styled her hair in a straight up do, and opted for a red lip, rouged cheeks, and winged liner to complete the look.

Mrunal Thakur also jumped on the hooded gown bandwagon, but gave it a traditional touch. She opted for an asymmetrical skirt, paired with a matching top featuring an elegant hood. The outfit, designed by Anamika Khanna, was teamed with statement earrings and Christian Louboutin pumps. For makeup, she opted for nude shades and styled her hair in a sleek fashion.

The recent Bulgari event in Venice also saw the hooded gown making an appearance. Anne Hathaway looked regal in a gold and silver Atelier Versace gown with an attached hood and thigh-high slit. The sheer ensemble was embellished with crystals, giving it an opulent look. She paired the look with a ruby necklace, matching rings and bracelets. As for makeup, she opted for rose hues.

The most sought-after fashion event of the year, Met Gala too became a runway for the hooded gown. None other than Penelope Cruz donned an angelic hooded sheer gown designed by Chanel. The dress featured an ample skirt, white pearls and shimmering silver sequins. She added a matching belt, platform heels and diamond hoop earrings to the look. The actor opted for a glossy nude lip, highlighter and eyeshadow for makeup, and sported a slicked-back hairdo.

At Oscars 2023, Malala Yousafzai made her debut in a silver shimmery dress by Ralph Lauren. The Nobel Peace Prize winner chose minimal accessories and opted for glam makeup.

But nothing can beat Priyanka Chopra’s deep burgundy strapless velvet gown with an intricately beaded and jewelled hood at Met Gala 2018. The Ralph Lauren number was a showstopper. Plus, the matching dark lip shade added to the oomph factor.
